Harvey competed with five regional construction firms to secure the DeMeritt Hall contract. As the successful bidder, Harvey is building a new 52,000 square foot state-of-the-art physics teaching and research facility for the University of New Hampshire.
The University proposed constructing the proposed building on the same site as the original building – in the heart of the campus. Harvey worked with the UNH Facility Management group to develop a logistics plan for demolition and construction that minimized disruption to the normal rhythm of the campus.
A key component to the construction bid criteria involved material recycling. Harvey developed and oversaw a plan for project recycling starting with the debris of the demolished building. More than 98% of the rubble from the building demolition was recycled. The team was able to recycle over 2,300 tons of debris comprised of 62% brick and concrete; 16% mixed materials; 7% wood; and 6% metals. Harvey worked closely with Institution Recycling Network to relocate the recycled materials to reuse sites including fill for roads.
The recycling effort also opened doors to salvage opportunities. A portion of the wood saved from the existing building was in good enough condition to sell on the reuse market; and a significant amount of the original building’s flooring was remilled and is being used by Harvey as part of the new building construction.
The new DeMeritt Hall will house classrooms, a 165-seat lecture hall, teaching labs, research labs, Physics library, student support spaces, and office spaces for faculty and graduate students. The building will also be completely air conditioned with state-of-the-art heat recovery systems.
